Ask the Expert

How exactly does majority voting vs. plurality voting work? In a majority standard, candidates receiving votes from a majority of voters win; those receiving less than a majority cannot win.  In a plurality standard, candidates who receive the most votes win. In an uncontested election all candidates could win, even if they receive less than a majority of votes. It also means that all candidates in an uncontested election will win—even those who receive a low number of votes due to abstentions. Have a question for our experts? Please click more.
