
Executive Search Experience: Bob Gariano founded Robert Gariano Associates, LLC in 2005. RGA has emerged as a nationally recognized search firm helping clients recruit board members and senior executives. Previously, Gariano was the Global Sector Leader for Russell Reynolds Associates. He led the team that tripled that firm’s revenues in the automotive, energy, natural resources, manufacturing, distribution, electronics, technology, and defense markets.
Gariano was also a senior partner in that firm’s CEO and Board of Directors practice. He recruited Chief Executive Officers for such notable public companies as PerkinElmer, Goodyear, Federal Mogul, PGI, Android Industries, Kemet Electronics, SENCO, CPI Group, Suntron, United Stationers, Federal Signal, the Software Engineering Institute, and Midway Games. He also recruited senior operating executives or board members for United Technologies, Navistar, Wesco, Saint Gobain, Owens Corning, Honeywell, Eaton, TRW, DuPont, Elway, Tribune, Navistar, CF Industries, General Cable, SPX, WMS, Brunswick, Bucyrus, Manitowoc, and Tyco.
Operating Experience: Gariano was with General Electric from 1973 to 1988. He was General Manager of the $2.5 billion Lexan Division. Earlier, he ran GE’s Automotive Application Center, GE-Canada, and was Director of Strategic Planning for GE Europe. In 1988 Gariano was recruited to W.W. Grainger, Inc. as Group Vice President leading six industrial distribution businesses.
Corporate Governance and Community Activities: Gariano serves on the board of directors of BFG Corporation and previously served on the board of Plextronics, Inc. He is President of the Chicago Foundation for Education, Area Chairman for Carnegie Mellon’s Alumni Council, and a member of the Board of Advisors for CMU’s Entrepreneurial Center. He was previously a Trustee for the Lake Forest Academy School and currently serves as a member of the Lake Forest Caucus.
Academic and Publications: Gariano earned a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University (1971), an M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts (1975), an M.L.A. from the University of Chicago (2001), and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Information Technology from Northwestern University’s McCormick Graduate School of Engineering (2006). He has also completed post-graduate study in financial mathematics with a specialization in Black Scholes modeling at the University of Chicago. Gariano is certified (CPIM) by the American Production and Inventory Control Society. In 2007 Gariano co-authored the book, Fundamental Talent, an analysis of the critical attributes for CEO candidates. A recognized expert on public company governance, Gariano has published more than 70 articles about corporate governance and Board of Director activities.
