EMC Poaches From Intel, CEO Race Gears Up

EMC is expected to announce today that Patrick Gelsinger, 48, who heads Intel’s core chip business, will run EMC’s storage-products operations and some smaller software units.

EMC has poached a top executive from Intel as the computer storage company reorganizes its executive suite, in a move which is also likely to set up an internal battle to succeed chief executive Joseph Tucci. EMC is expected to announce today that Patrick Gelsinger, 48, who heads Intel’s core chip business, will run EMC’s storage-products operations and some smaller software units, effective immediately, reports the Wall Street Journal. EMC also promoted veteran executive Howard Elias, 52, to head the services division, which includes maintenance, consulting and back-up storage. Tucci, the current chairman and CEO, said that the two men, along with chief financial officer David Goulden, 50, are all possible successors as chief executive—although there is no guarantee that one of them will succeed him. Tucci, 62, said he plans to leave the CEO spot in three years. The actions may quell speculation that EMC is a takeover target, said the report. With no obvious successor in place and the remaining length of Tucci’s tenure previously unknown, EMC has been seen as a purchase candidate for bigger companies, such as CiscoSystems, one of its marketing partners.
