EU Regulators to Investigate Oracle-Sun

A European regulator will examine whether the pending Oracle-Sun deal violates hinders market competition.

Throwing up a final roadblock to its takeover of Sun Microsystems, Oracle was told by European regulators today that an investigation would be conducted on the merger, according to the New York Times. European Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes said that the European Union regulators would have to review the terms of the deal in order to ensure that its completion would not restrict competition within the databases industry. Her agency would “examine very carefully the effects on competition in Europe when the world’s leading proprietary database company proposes to take over the world’s leading open-source database company,” said Kroes.
