The 2007 Directorship 100

BOSTON (September 1, 2007) – The most influential players in U.S. corporate governance, and why CalPERS tops them all.

Inaugural List Ranks Key Players in Corporate Governance

CalPERS Tops List as the Most Influential of The Directorship 100

BOSTON – Directorship, the leading magazine for public company board directors, named the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) as the most influential player in corporate governance. The $250 billion retirement fund has helped put executive pay on the agenda and railed against poor governance. No other person or institution has had such a continuous and profound effect on the boardroom, according to the publication.

The prestigious list appears in the September 2007 cover story of Directorship. The selection process was completed by a distinguished board of advisers, reader surveys, and the editors of Directorship. In addition to CalPERS, Directorship named U.S. Congressman Barney Frank; billionaire Warren Buffett; Ira Millstein, the “grandfather” of governance; and some unexpected others, such as Enron’s convicted CEO Jeffrey Skilling, to its list, which it plans to publish annually.

“In the world of corporate governance, there are three main factions – one side makes the rules, another monitors and enforces, and finally directors need to understand and implement. Knowing who has the greatest influence is particularly important to directors as their understanding of corporate governance determines how they must guide their companies,” says Jeffrey M. Cunningham, a Fortune 100 board director and chairman of Directorship.
